5 things NOT to do in therapy

Lessons from the most successful teens

1. Don’t say everything is “fine.”

My successful patients reject the notion of settling for "fine" and instead confront their challenges head-on. The remarkable teenagers I work with display emotional honesty and acknowledge a wide range of feelings, refusing to mask significant issues with contentment. This courageous step is the foundation for long-term change.

2. Don't wait for me to take the lead in the session.

Rather than passively waiting for guidance, take an active role in therapy. Some of my teens come prepared with a list of topics to discuss, while others may start with uncertainty but eagerly engage in the session as I guide them. Those who embrace this proactive approach tend to experience remarkable progress.

3. Don’t be afraid to take responsibility for your actions.

My teens demonstrate bravery by taking responsibility for their actions. It takes courage for a patient to discuss where they may have made mistakes in responding to different situations. I'm consistently impressed by the teenagers who engage in difficult conversations, including examining their own thinking and reactions.

4. Don't take their time in therapy for granted.

Successful patients value their time in therapy and recognize its significance. They make the most of each session, understanding it's worth as a valuable resource. They are committed to utilizing every minute to gain insights and make progress.

5. Do not be afraid of change.

Change can be uncomfortable, yet these exceptional teenagers are not afraid to embrace it. They take small steps towards creating their ideal lives, understanding that growth requires effort and commitment. Their willingness to face discomfort and pursue positive change serves as an inspiration to others.

In their refusal to settle, their proactive approach, their acceptance of responsibility, their gratitude for therapy, and their embrace of change, these extraordinary teenagers exemplify the capacity within all of us to overcome challenges and build lives filled with purpose. They inspire others to embark on their own journeys of growth and self-discovery.
